8 Dos and Don'ts For Your Best Holiday Skin Ever
We don’t blame you for putting dazzling skin at the tip-top of your holiday wish list. Whether in the name of family gatherings, an exciting vacation or an infinite number of holiday parties, ‘tis the season to show off a winter glow. Unfortunately, ‘tis also the season of a few pesky skin stressors (the aforementioned celebrations, a packed shopping schedule and crazy cold weather) that make it extra challenging to keep that visage in perfect shape. We asked Alina Gonzalez, Avon’s executive director of global innovation, and Dr. Julia Tzu, medical director and founder of Wall Street Dermatology in New York City, to clue us in on their tips for keeping skin merry, bright and beautiful.
1. DO double down on moisturizer.
The combo of chilly outside temps and dry hot air inside can lead to parched and irritated skin, so frequent use of emollients and moisturizers is a cold-weather must. “Pay special attention to delicate areas, such as your neck and under your eyes,” says Dr. Tzu. Gonzalez suggests changing up your go-to formula during winter: “If you use a lightweight lotion in the summer, switch to a more hydrating version or heavier cream as the seasons change.”
2. DON’T stow away your sunscreen.
“In the winter months, UV rays can be just as damaging,” says Gonzalez. Whether you’re skiing or surfing, invest in Anew Clinical Skinvincible Multi-Shield Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 50, a moisturizer and sun protector in one.
3. DON’T take hot showers.
We know it’s tempting to retreat from a Siberian climate into the comfort of a steaming shower. But hot water dries and irritates skin, and will make even naturally shiny hair lackluster. For the sake of beauty, learn to love a lukewarm rinse.
4. DO prioritize beauty sleep.
Missing out on zzzs deprives skin of its usual time to regenerate. Dr. Tzu recommends squeezing in naps and doing your best to stay on a routine sleep cycle despite a busy schedule. And no matter what time you hit the pillow, always wash your face first. “Makeup can clog pores and prevent your skin from breathing,” says Gonzalez. If all else fails, keep cleansing wipes on hand.
5. DON’T live on eggnog and mini candy canes.
Foods high in sugar and dairy are considered “pro-inflammatory” and can cause acne flare-ups—definitely not the surprise you were hoping for on Christmas morning. “Balance your diet with foods rich in fiber, like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains,” says Dr. Tzu.
6. DON’T make BFFs with the bartender.
Keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum will prevent sallow-looking or sagging skin, and also ensure that you won’t be that girl at the office holiday party. Instead, drink tons of water to keep yourself hydrated from the inside out. If you must imbibe, chug at least one glass of H2O for every glass of bubbly.
7. DO invest in a hydrating mask.
If you need a refresher after that redeye flight back home, a hydrating mask is your to-the-rescue treatment for replenishing moisture and soothing tired skin. Gonzalez recommends Avon’s ANEW Clinical Overnight Hydration Mask, a time-saving treatment that absorbs instantly and works its magic while you sleep.
8. DO pamper yourself.
Since holiday stress can increase your of chances of a breakout, Dr. Tzu suggests gifting yourself a massage, a little aromatherapy or a relaxing bath to keep your mind calm and your skin clear. Remember, those are doctor’s orders.
