Let’s Talk About Sleep

Sleep! Hands up if you struggle with this simple task? Yep, me too. According to a survey of the nation’s sleep habits, nearly a third of the population are suffering from insomnia. I’d like to share with you some of the tips that have helped me says guest blogger

Try not to have caffeine in the afternoon – it’s no secret that caffeine is a stimulant and stays in your system for a long time, stopping you from feeling tired when you need to go to sleep.

Dim the lights – this will help your body release melatonin, a natural chemical that makes you sleepy. If you have bright lights on when your body should be winding down, your melatonin won’t release as easily and you’ll struggle to feel sleepy. Try a relaxing hot bath around two hours before bed. The rise and drop in body temperature relaxes you (plus who doesn’t love a candlelit bubble bath?). One of the biggest sleep problems is when we lie awake at night, thinking. Thinking about anything, but worst of all, thinking about how we can’t sleep! Zone out with some relaxing sleep music and focus on the soothing sounds rather than your own stream of thoughts (there are plenty of free sleep music on music streaming services!).
