Maskne: How to Keep Your Skin Blemish-Free

2020 to 2021 has been a rollercoaster of emotions, right? And just when we think we’re coping, the world of skincare throws a maskne-shaped curveball our way. But what is maskne and how we can we prevent it?

WHAT IS MASKNE? Maskne, or acne mechanica if you’re fancy, is essentially a collection of blemishes that form in the areas your face covering touches your skin. And although it’s a relatively new term, many professionals from around the world have long struggled with the negative impact wearing a face covering can have on your complexion.

WHAT CAUSES MASKNE? With face coverings now mandatory in shops across most of the UK, you’re probably spending more time than ever wearing a face mask. And although face coverings can help slow down the spread of germs, they’re also the perfect breeding ground for breakouts, trapping sweat, oil and bacteria on your skin.

HOW TO PREVENT MASKNE Maskne may be super-annoying, but it’s also completely treatable. Here are 5 simple steps you can follow to help you achieve clearer skin.

1. SAVE MAKE-UP FOR MASK-FREE DAYS

The bonus of wearing something that covers half of your face is that you don’t have to worry so much about make-up. Keeping your skin clear of pore-clogging foundation and concealer will slow down the build-up of bacteria, oil and sweat that can get trapped on your skin.

Can’t go without? Use lightweight bb creams or make-up with blemish-fighting ingredients and try to avoid layering make-up around your mouth and chin area. Instead, focus on bringing out your eyes with gorgeous eyeshadows, eyeliners and

volumising mascaras.

2. CLEANSE TWICE A DAY

That’s morning and night, using a cleanser that suits your skin type. Cleansers containing soothing ingredients, such as cannabis sativa oil, are perfect for those with skin that feels dry and irritated. Alternatively, if you struggle with oily/combination skin, look for a cleanser containing the ingredients salicylic acid. This spot-fighting wonder works by exfoliating your skin, helping to keep pores clear. Perfect after a day of wearing your face cover.

Looking for an extra boost? Use a lightweight gel to double cleanse your skin. Ingredients such as micellar work to remove any remaining make-up, oil or bacteria so your skin is left feeling clean and

fresh

3. KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED Using a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser will help to repair your skin’s natural barrier and prevent dryness. If you’re really struggling with maskne, opt for a moisturiser with salicylic acid eucalyptus extract or witch hazel.

For more sensitive skin, try face creams with cannabis sativa oil. They’ll not only leave your skin calmer, but the antibacterial qualities of cannabis sativa will help to regulate how much oil your skin produces.

4. USE TARGETED TREATMENTS

Sometimes the best way to get rid of a blemish is with a targeted treatment or serum.

One of the hottest skincare treatments to come from Japan and South Korea is blemish clearing patches. These translucent wonders work by blending salicylic acid and botanical extracts, to help soothe and clear blemishes in just 8 hours.

5. CHOOSE THE RIGHT FACE COVERING FOR YOU Just like your clothes, it’s important you wear a face covering that’s made from a natural material that allows the skin to breathe.

Many disposable face covers are made from synthetics, such as nylon, which help ramp up the bacteria and oil build-up on your skin. Instead, look for reusable 100% cotton face coverings which will not only be kinder to your skin but the environment too.

With face coverings not going anywhere any time soon, we hope our skincare guide for maskne has you prepped and ready to fight any blemishes that decide to raise their ugly heads!
